Stafforce Recruitment Whitworth Cup Final PDF Print E-mail
Season 2008 - Weekly Cricket Report

Image Treeton 238 for 7 Elsecar 240 for 1

Elsecar won the Whitworth Cup for the 10th time in the competition's history and for the fourth year in succession at Wickersley on Sunday. Although threatening clouds appeared before the game and during the tea interval, the deluge and delay of the previous day were avoided and the game ended in bright and warm sunshine.

Treeton won the toss and elected to bat. Their opening partnership added 65 before former Northfield Lane favourite Andrew Tomlinson fell for 20. Danny Kemp helped take the score to 105 before he became the second batsmen to leave. The Treeton skipper Chris Cobb was run out at 153 with his contribution 18. All the time Steve Foster had been compiling runs with his normal efficiency and the Washfield star looked set for his century until Lesroy Weekes dislodged him for 85. Steve had compiled 10 fours and 3 sixes in the process. The Treeton innings had tottered slightly to 200 for 7. The Treeton contingent in the sizeable crowd were then treat to a final flourish from Scott Ellis and Rashad Shafayat which yielded 38 runs in just 17 balls including 22 runs from the final over! Scott smashed 5 fours in reaching 32 not out in 22 balls and Rashad 14 not out in just 6 balls. The Treeton innings closed at 238 for 7. Lesroy Weekes took 3 for 58 and Alan Shore was the most economical Elsecar bowler with 1 for 29 for his 9 overs.

Ian Swallow of Elsecar CC - 127*
Elsecar received an early setback and Treeton’s hopes of lifting the trophy were raised at 9 for 1. This brought in the Elsecar skipper Ian Swallow to join Jason Meadows. The two occupants set about building the match winning stand. The century partnership came in the 22nd over; Meadows reached his 50 in the next and Ian Swallow in the over after that. After that Swallow’s innings burst into a fine array of strokes and deft touches which brought boundary after boundary and saw him race to his 100 in the same number of balls. The Elsecar ace closed on 127 not out which included 25 boundaries. Jason Meadows supported his skipper with a typical anchor innings which took him to 94 not out with 12 fours and 4 sixes. The partnership yielded 226 unbeaten runs and the winning runs came with 5 overs left to play.

Ian Swallow won the newly named Ian Dickinson man of the match trophy for his superlative innings and Wickersley were fully complemented by all for staging a well organised and highly entertaining event enjoyed by many hundreds of spectators.

Darfield 145 for 5 Houghton Main 143

In the only South Yorkshire League game to escape the wet conditions Darfield took a step nearer to avoiding relegation with a 5 wicket victory over near neighbours Houghton Main at School Street on Saturday. Winning the toss skipper Richard Heaney had no hesitation in asking the visitors to take 1st knock in a game reduced to 35 over’s each due to the downpours of the day.

Houghton reached 109 for 1 thanks to 47 from opener Nick Bisby and 51 from the burgeoning talents of 16 year old Aiden Morris. They then dramatically collapsed losing the last 9 wickets for only 34 runs to close on the penultimate ball for 143.

Pick of the Darfield bowlers were Carl Wilkinson with 5 for 56 and Paul Wilkinson with 4 for 49. They were aided by wicket keeper Paul Haddon with 3 stampings and a catch.

Some fiery pace bowling, in not the best of light, from Rob Jones and Aussie Leigh Brennan had Darfield at 50 for 2 but then Scott Adamson joined opener Simon Potter and gradually wrestled the initiative from Houghton with a partnership of 75 before Potter was dismissed for 50. Adamson went to his 50 with a huge six but then was dismissed for 56. His innings included 8 fours and 3 sixes. Darfield reached a winning total with 5 wickets and 8 overs left. Leigh Brennan took 3 for 59 for Houghton.

What Is Going On? PDF Print E-mail
Season 2008 - League News
Written by SteveTaylor
Image As the season has gone on there have been more and more reports of poor behaviour, excessive sledging, confrontations and a general disregard for The Spirit of the Game.

We have had 2 more this week involving the games last Saturday at Rotherham Phoenix and Wath. I have received reports throughout the season from a number of umpires and players regarding disgusting remarks made by one player to another. This has got to stop.

We have worked very hard behind the scenes to bring on board new umpires and we have bucked the National trend in our achievements. We need to retain these umpires. We must encourage them not discourage them.

One former player who is now umpiring is very disillusioned with  how the way the game is drifting. He was a tough competitor in his days but always played hard and fair and that's what we want to see now. This umpire is considering spending his summer Saturdays doing something else.....what a waste that would be.

Players make mistakes in every game and of course umpires do......this a fact of life and happens at every level of the game. If players are unhappy with decisions they MUST put it behind them and get on with the game. It is not all one way though. If umpires continually perform poorly they should be reported in a proper and constructive manner. Umpires must also report any misdemeanours. There are many umpires who will not report incidents because they want to avoid the possible hassle of disciplinary hearings and so on. They cannot continue in this way. If we are to eradicate this mindless behaviour we need the umpires to report incidents as indicated within The Laws. We can only police this if the umpires do their job properly.

If we are to progress in this area it will require ALL parties, players, umpires, officials and spectators, to act within The Spirit of the Game and carry out their roles and duties correctly.

Let's bring an end to mindless and moronic behaviour and start to enjoy our Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Let me add that while this is a growing problem there are still many games each week that go ahead without these problems, so it can be achieved

Players can be assured that the SYCL will come down hard on guilty parties from now on. Just because it mirrors the society we live in does not make it acceptable. We have had our bellyful quite frankly and believe me we WILL sort this problem.

Image Note from Terry Bentham

The management committee and I, along with Ian Cotterhill are to look at various methods of speeding up and streamlining disciplinary procedure.

The one thing that concerns me more than anything is clubs who try to defend the indefensible and it ends up with a hearing and in some cases the umpires on trial.

The same umpires who generally are the only impartial people at the game.

It takes up too much time and causes loads of work for our already overworked officials.

Do we go down the road of the ECBYL where umpires can dish out a 2 match suspension to a player, on the day, with no right of appeal?

Do we issue umpires with red and yellow cards? I hope not.

Do we introduce sin bins? No.

Do we encourage our umpires to be awarding the 5 penalty runs for dissent much more often as per our present rule allows? YES.

Do we extend this to be awarded after crude and personally sledging that quite plainly goes against the Code of Conduct, see our league rule 41. This sledging sometimes is the start of unpleasantness that spills over.

Perhaps a warning, then 5 penalty runs. Second offence 5 penalty runs and so on. It would apply to the team and not the individual player.

Plenty of food for thought and plenty of ammo for the forum boys.
